(Toronto) The University of Toronto Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Ontario Citizenship and Immigration Minister Charles Sousa will address and congratulate the second cohort of the law school's groundbreaking Internationally Trained Lawyers Program (ITLP), March 31, 2012 in a recognition ceremony commencing at 2 pm. The Minister will be speaking at 3:30 pm.
The ITLP launched in May 2010 in response to the many challenges faced by internationally trained lawyers seeking accreditation to practice law in Canada. It's a comprehensive 10-month program at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law that provides academic and career-related courses to address the unique needs of international lawyers, and includes a professional internship.
This year, 49 students from 18 different countries are graduating from the comprehensive program, a total of 96 over the last two years. Countries of origin include: Bangladesh, Belarus, Cameroon, India, Iran, Israel, Kenya, South Korea, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Uganda, Ukraine, UK, USA and Taiwan. Some participants have already landed articling positions with firms and/or government agencies, the last step before being called to the Ontario bar.
The ITLP is supported with generous funding by the Governments of Ontario and Canada.
