Toronto - The Black Law Students Association at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law is sponsoring a one-day open house on Saturday January 19th at the law school - "See Yourself Here" - to encourage young black high school and undergraduate students to pursue professional studies at the Faculty of Law.
Students from the community will have an opportunity to meet with current law school students and lawyers and talk to them about their experiences.
"The law school has a long tradition of encouraging members of unrepresented communities to consider a career in law. We are delighted to partner with the BLSA on this initiative. The students have shown tremendous leadership in planning and implementing this program, which is a welcome addition to the law school's accessibility and outreach initiatives," says Bonnie Goldberg, Assistant Dean for Students at the Faculty of Law.
The U of T chapter of the BLSA is a member of the Black Law Students' Association of Canada (BLSAC). It works with the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers, Canadian law schools and other legal bodies to identify and remove the barriers that keep African Canadian people from attending law school and considering a career in law.
"What we really want to see is more black youth applying to U of T. They deserve to be here and we know they will feel welcome here. The open house is one way of showing the community what the available resources are and that we are in a position to mentor them," says Renee Smith, one of the student co-chairs of the event.
High school students, undergraduate students and their families are welcome to attend. The program is free, but registration is required, visit www.blsauoft.org to register.
