The Faculty of Law was saddened to hear of the death of alumnus The Honourable Mr. Justice Randall Scott Echlin, class of '75.
Justice Echlin's family sent the following obituary:
Randy passed away at home on August 12, 2011. He articled at McCarthy and McCarthy (now McCarthy Tetrault LLP), then went to Borden and Elliott (now Borden Ladner Gervais LLP). Randy began specializing in the developing area of employment law, specifically wrongful dismissal, a subject on which he authored a number of books. The mentoring of promising juniors was always an important part of his personal mandate. For the last eight years he was privileged to be a Justice of the Superior Court of Justice (Ontario). Again, he readily shared his experience with newer judges and those who were unfamiliar with employment law. His three main passions in life were his family, the law, and baseball. Randy was always grateful to the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto; Victoria University; and Hillfield Strathallan Colleges for having contributed so much to his success.
