Today, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR-IHSPR) awarded its first CIHR Barer-Flood Prize, named in honour of the outstanding work of alumna (LLM '94, SJD '98) Prof. Colleen Flood, Faculty of Law, and Dr. Morris Barer, the Institute’s first two scientific directors.

The $25,000 research grant award recognizes the outstanding contributions of a Canadian health services and policy scholar whose career has advanced health care research, policy or care delivery in Canada. Dr. Andreas Laupacis, executive director of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael's Hospital, is the recipient of the inaugural CIHR Barer-Flood Prize.

A renowned expert in health and health-policy law, Colleen Flood holds a Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy and is cross-appointed to the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation and the School of Public Policy.

She has consulted on comparative health policy and governance issues for the Senate Social Affairs Committee studying health care in Canada, and for the Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada (the Romanow Commission). She has authored numerous articles, book chapters, and reports, in addition to authoring and/or editing eight books.
