Law and Economics at the Faculty of Law

Prof. Mariana Mota PradoLaw and Economics is a long-standing example of the Faculty of Law’s belief in inderdisciplinary approaches to the study of law. Several faculty members have been among the pioneering scholars in this discipline, notably Prof. Michael Trebilcock, Chair in Law and Economics, and the law school is one of the leading global centres for research in this field.

Students enrolled in the J.D. Program who wish to focus on law and economics can take advantage of study and research opportunities in a broad range of subject areas with a significant law-economics interface.

Subject areas with a significant economic component include competition policy, law and development, corporate governance, tax and tax policy, business organizations, economic regulation, environmental control, and international trade regulation. Any student enrolled in the J.D. program is free to take any or all of these courses. (Available courses may change from year to year - see the course list for those available in the current year.)

As well, students can benefit from teachers from several related disciplines: the Department of Political Science, the Department of  Economics, and the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management.

Students also have the opportunity to attend the Law and Economics Workshop, which brings Canadian and international experts and practitioners to the law school on a regular basis to share their knowledge and current research with faculty and students. The seminar may be taken for academic credit.

In addition, the Faculty of Law offers combined JD/MA and JD/PhD programs with the Graduate Department of Economics.
