Sophia Reibetanz Moreau, B.A. (Toronto) 1994; B.Phil. (Oxford) 1996; Ph.D. (Harvard) 2000; J.D. (Toronto) 2002, is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law.  She is cross-appointed to the Department of Philosophy and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Centre for Ethics.

In 2002-2003, Professor Moreau served as law clerk to Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin of the Supreme Court of Canada.  She has also been a Frank Knox Memorial Fellow at Harvard University, where she wrote a doctoral dissertation in the Department of Philosophy on practical deliberation, the nature of autonomy and the significance of character; and a Commonwealth Scholar at the University of Oxford, where she completed a B.Phil. in legal and political philosophy.

Professor Moreau's current legal research focuses on equality rights and anti-discrimination law in the public and private sectors.  Her work on s.15 of the Charter appears in the anthology Making Equality Rights Real: Securing Substantive Equality Under the Charter; and in 2005, she was commissioned to write a report for the federal government on grounds of discrimination and gender identity, entitled "What Makes a Ground of Discrimination?".  She has also published twice in Ethics, and in the Journal of Law and Equality, Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society, and the University of Toronto Faculty of Law Journal. Professor Moreau is currently working on a book on equality rights, "The Many Faces of Equality", for which she has received a SSHRCC grant from 2006-2009
