Richard Charney

Richard J. Charney, LLB (Western) 1980, LLM (Cambridge) 1982, is a Toronto-based partner in the international law firm of Norton Rose.  Called to the Ontario Bar in 1983, he practises labour, employment and administrative law, and has been designated by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Certified Specialist in Labour Law. Mr. Charney regularly appears before labour boards, boards of arbitration and courts including the Supreme Court of Canada. He also provides strategic and policy advice to clients, and engages in collective bargaining. He lectures regularly having also taught collective bargaining law for the part-time LLM program at Osgoode Hall Law School. Amongst his writing is Judicial Review in Labour Law, a text which he co-authored and was the recipient of the Walter Owen Book Prize; and a chapter in the Collective Agreement Arbitration in Canada.  As a legal practitioner, Mr. Charney has served a range of clients such as universities, transportation undertakings, municipalities, electric power utilities, and employers and employers' organizations active in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and arts and entertainment.
