Dera J. Nevin is the Senior Director, Litigation Support Services at McCarthy Tétrault LLP. She is responsible for administering all e-Discovery and electronic evidence management initiatives across the firm.  Ms. Nevin is also counsel to the firm and its clients on matters of e-Discovery and electronic evidence law and procedure and associated privacy law, international law relating to the production and exchange of evidence and local documentary production requirements.  She also advises on matters associated with the forensic capture or collection and use in proceedings of electronic evidence, including the requirements for obtaining and executing Anton Pillar Orders.

Ms. Nevin has extensive project management experience in electronic document collection, processing and document review initiatives, and has supervised extensive review projects, including those occurring in multiple jurisdictions and involving millions of producible records.  She is proficient in numerous electronic data collection and processing techniques and with multiple electronic evidence management and review tools.  She also has experience recommending and supervising the use of automation processes and technology assisted review.  Ms. Nevin is responsible for coordinating electronic evidence consulting and tool procurement for McCarthys.

Ms. Nevin has been appointed to the Advisory Board of Bryan University’s Graduate Program in e-Discovery Project Management and serves on the faculty of that programme.  Ms. Nevin is also a member of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model, The Sedona Conference Working Group 1, the Sedona Canada Working Group 7, and the OBA’s E-Discovery Implementation Committee.  She has spoken and written on a variety of topics relating to electronic evidence management, including document review and production, large team coordination, international transmission of data, collection from novel sources including social media and the cloud, and the law of privilege and privacy in the management and exchange of electronic records.  Her written articles have appeared in firm publications and in the Association of Corporate Counsel magazine.  She writes a regular column on e-Discovery Issues in Canadian Lawyer magazine, and is a contributor to snIP/ITs, McCarthy Tétrault’s technology law blog.

Ms. Nevin is featured in Understanding Canadian eDiscovery, a McCarthy Tétrault video that introduces and demystifies the issues that clients face in electronic discoveries.

Prior to her appointment at McCarthy’s, Ms. Nevin practiced corporate and commercial litigation at Ogilvy Renault LLP and Blakes LLP.

Dera J. Nevin is a graduate of the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto (J.D., 2001), and Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario (M.A., 1996; B.A. (Honours), 1995).  She was called to the Ontario bar in 2002.
