Over and beyond the intricacies of practicing in the field of Intellectual Property, IP lawyers need to continuously
adapt their services to maintain alignment with their clients’ business goals and needs. From an in-house
perspective, find out how a true understanding of the client’s business context is in the client’s best interests
and can have a significant impact on the ultimate value of IP assets.
Robert Guay is currently Director, IP Operations at BlackBerry Limited (formerly known as RIM Limited) where, as part of a team of in-house attorneys and agents, he assumes primary responsibility for RIM’s growing patent portfolio. He was admitted to the Ontario Bar is 1999, and is a registered patent agent with an electrical engineering background. Robert joined BlackBerry in 2005 from Bombardier, where he spent five years in various IP counseling positions of increasing responsibility leading up to being the Head of Bombardier Transportation’s IP Group and responsible for IP matters globally.
Robert completed his legal and engineering studies at the University of Ottawa and is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Law Society of Upper Canada.
Robert’s current responsibilities include in particular general patent portfolio management, but also the timely discovery, disclosure, selection, drafting and strategic prosecution of quality patent applications in a wide range of fields relating to the research, development, and standardization of wireless systems, devices, products and services.
