A basic and critical survey of criminal procedure designed to provide a knowledge of the criminal process, including its strengths, weaknesses and underlying policies. Arrest, search and seizure, trial within a reasonable time, remand procedures, bail, compelling appearance, pleadings, joint trials and severance, classification of offenses, jurisdiction, preliminary hearing, the jury, and disclosure are all topics that will be covered. There will be emphasis throughout on the impact of the Charter of Rights on the common law and statutory rules of criminal procedure. Some knowledge of evidence law is helpful but not essential.

Evaluation
A final 3-hour open book examination.
