This course is an introduction to Canadian income tax law. The major substantive questions to be dealt with are: which economic gains constitute "income"; how are "capital" gains taxed; when is a gain income for tax purposes; which payments or other economic losses qualify as deductions from income (and when); whose income is taxed in Canada. Competing principles in the interpretation of taxing statutes and problems of tax planning will be discussed throughout the course.

Evaluation
will be by scheduled 3 hour open book examination.
