A general introduction to maritime and admiralty law. Consideration will be given to the following topics: Historical origins of Maritime Law; The carriage of goods by sea; marine insurance and the Marine Insurance Act; Salvage and General Average; maritime liens; Admiralty jurisdiction, Federal Court procedures and arrest of ships; Collisions; Limitation of ship owner’s liability; The Marine Liability Act; The Canada Shipping Act; and Commercial aspects of the shipping industry/vessel ownership.

Evaluation
Class participation 15% (10% contributions to class discussion and 5% attendance) and a three-hour open book examination (85%).
