A general introduction to maritime and admiralty law. Consideration will be given to the following topics: Historical origins of Maritime Law; The carriage of goods by sea and related mercantile practice; Marine insurance and the Marine Insurance Act; Salvage at sea; General Average; Maritme liens; Admiralty jurisdiction, Federal Court procedures and arrest of ships; Collisions; Limitation of ship owner’s liability; The Marine Liability Act; The Canada Shipping Act; Commercial aspects of the shipping industry and marine pollution.

Evaluation
Class participation 15% and a three-hour open book examination (85%).
