This is an eligible course for credit towards the Aboriginal Legal Studies Certificate.

Students who will be taking Aboriginal Peoples and Canadian Law in Winter 2013, OR have taken the course during the 2011-12 academic year, may obtain two ungraded credits for attending court to observe the Keewatin (Treaty 3) appeal, which is scheduled to be heard by the Court of Appeal of Ontario (Toronto) during January 2013.  Students will be required to read the underlying trial decision (2011 ONSC 4801, [2011] O.J. No. 3907), and the appeal factums for the Ontario, Canada and Keewatin parties.  Students may choose to read additional factums if desired.  All factums will be provided by the course instructor.  Students will observe portions of the proceedings at the Court of Appeal.  Students may have the opportunity to discuss the appeal with participating counsel.  Attendance at court will be arranged in consultation with the instructor, and will include two full days of the hearing, plus an additional 8 cumulative hours of observation.

Evaluation
Students will write a minimum 20 page paper on the insights this experience sheds on the issues covered in Aboriginal Peoples and Canadian Law. Assignments must be submitted to the Records Office on or before 10:00 am on April 24, 2013
