International Human Rights Program Promoting Global Human Rights Through Legal Education, Research, and Advocacy |
|
The International Human Rights Program (IHRP) at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, in conjunction with Human Rights Watch (Toronto Committee), Rights and Democracy, Amnesty International, InCAT.ORG and the Law Society of Upper Canada, presents a PUBLIC PANEL DISCUSSION addressing the following subject:
Redress for Canadian Victims of Torture, and the Responsibilities of the Canadian Legal System
The recent exposure of several shocking instances of Canadians suffering torture abroad has made clear the need for our legal system to offer remedies for this offense.
Several Canadian victims of torture or their family members are seeking a legal forum to express their sufferings, an opportunity to sue for damages or other remedies from those responsible for their suffering, and psychological closure through the assessment of responsibility and blame.
Why does our legal system continue to privilege the “immunity” of foreign states over the inalienable rights of our citizens?
On Oct. 1, please join us for a panel discussion on this important subject. Help us move from words to action.
This event is open to all members of the public and media. We warmly invite all who are interested to attend and participate.
