A gift of $1 million from Imasco Ltd. has been matched by the Province of Ontario and the University of Toronto to form a $3 million endowment to support the Leadership Awards at the Faculty of Law. This gift, made under the guidance of Imasco's president and CEO, Brian Levitt '73, will allow the Faculty of Law to reward academic excellence and help students in need of financial assistance.
Brian's leadership in securing these funds for student aid may owe something to his own experiences as a student. After graduating in engineering from U of T in 1969, he decided not to pursue a career as an engineer. Instead, he took an administrative position at the university. Sometime in that year, he made the decision to study law. He chose the U of T law school partly because he would be able to combine enrollment here with part-time work as a member of the university staff. After graduating with an LL.B. in 1973, a time when a large number of young people were entering the work force, he "took the first job that was offered," as he puts it himself. Now Brian has taken action to ensure that help is available for good students who must struggle financially to complete their education. The size of the endowment will ensure that each year a great many deserving students will receive financial assistance. The law school is extremely grateful to be able to offer this level of support to members of the LL.B. programme.
