The international reputation of our faculty, their breadth of interests and approaches, and the intensive intellectual atmosphere of our school create outstanding opportunities for graduate students pursuing these degrees.
- Our teaching faculty includes some of the finest doctrinal and theoretical legal scholars in public and private law. The diversity of research interests amongst the faculty allows us to supervise graduate research in almost all areas of legal scholarship.
- Our pluralistic academic community invites a variety of approaches to legal scholarship (including, but not limited to, feminism and the law, law and economics, legal history, law and society, analytical jurisprudence and critical legal theory).
- Over a third of our faculty are cross-appointed to other faculties and departments, and this commitment to inter-disciplinary scholarship encourages students to position their legal research within a broader, inter-disciplinary context. The Faculty has strong connections to other divisions within the University, including the Rotman School of Management, the Joint Centre for Bioethics, the Centres for Criminology and Industrial Relations, the Departments of Economics, Environmental Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, and the Women and Gender Studies Institute, and students are encouraged to take courses in these departments.
- Strong relationships with faculty members are forged by the supervision relationship, as well as through numerous informal opportunities to interact with faculty. Graduate students are encouraged to present their work in progress to faculty and colleagues in weekly thesis symposia.
- Our many workshops, lecture series, seminars and roundtables feature some of the best legal academics and foster a dynamic intellectual environment.
- Through our Distinguished Visiting Faculty program, students have the opportunity to meet with and learn from some of the world’s finest legal scholars. Each year, the program draws 20 to 25 leading scholars from around the world to the law school.
- In addition to the formal study program, graduate students can participate in internships through the Pro Bono Law Students program and the International Human Rights Program.
- Career counseling for graduate students is available from our Career Development Office.
