Domestic JD degree students are considered automatically for all merit and needs-based awards offered by the Faculty. Students do not apply for specific awards. Instead, first consideration for all Faculty of Law awards is given to students who have demonstrated financial need, as determined from their applications to thJD Financial Aid Program.


Entrance Bursaries and Scholarships

The Aird Scholarship
was established by the provincial government to honour the Honourable John Black Aird on his retirement as Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario. This award assists physically disabled students pursue full-time studies at a recognized Ontario post-secondary institution and to help foster a special talent or life-time interest. Successful applicants who best demonstrate scholastic achievement and outstanding motivation and initiative will be awarded a scholarship of $2,500 each. The Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP Entrance Scholarships
established in 1987 for students entering the first year of the J.D. program, are to be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, involvement in extracurricular activities, public service and financial need. One or more scholarships are to be awarded annually in amounts not less than $1,000 to a total of $5,000.

The Borden Ladner Gervais LLP Entrance Scholarship
a gift of the law firm of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (Toronto), in the amount of $1,500, to be awarded to a student entering the first year of the J.D. program on the basis of academic excellence, extracurricular activities and public service. The scholarship is renewable in each of the second and third years of the program if the student demonstrates academic excellence.

The Borden Ladner Gervais LLP Entrance Scholarship
a gift of the law firm of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (Vancouver), to be awarded annually to a student entering the first year of the J.D. program who intends to return to British Columbia to practise law and who either is a resident of British Columbia or has obtained an undergraduate degree in British Columbia. This scholarship is in the amount of $1,000 and is to be awarded on the basis of academic excellence and public service.

Canadian Macedonian Federation Award at the Faculty of Law
was established in 2009 by the Canadian Macedonian Federation to assist law students at U of T. It is to be awarded to JD students based on financial need. Preference will be given to students with a connection to or involvement with the Macedonian community.

The Cassels Brock & Blackwell Centennial Entrance Scholarship
established in 1988 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the firm, is in the amount of $1,000, to be awarded annually to a student entering the first year of the J.D. program on the basis of academic excellence, involvement in extracurricular activities, public service and financial need.

Class of 1998 Graditude Fund
established by the Class of 1998 in support of an entrance bursary, to go to students in financial need and to ensure the diversity of the student body.

The Davis and Company Entrance Scholarship
to be awarded annually to a student entering the first year of the J.D. program who is either a graduate of a recognized university in British Columbia or a resident of British Columbia conducting undergraduate studies outside the province, but who intends to return to British Columbia to practise law. The scholarship is in the amount of $1,000 and is to be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, involvement in extracurricular activities, public service and financial need.

Department of Justice Scholarships
offered by the Department of Justice Canada through the Legal Studies for Aboriginal People Program, are to promote equitable representation of Aboriginal people in the legal profession, and to provide financial asistance to Metis and non-status Indians who wish to attend law school. Edward L. Donegan Bursary
awarded annually to one or more students in any year of the J.D. program who has demonstrated excellence in all aspects of his or her university academic record, financial need, and an interest in business law.  Preference is given to students enrolled in the J.D./M.B.A. or the J.D./M.A. (Economics) program.

The George and Helen Doner Scholarship
to be awarded to the graduating student of Victoria College with overall “A” standing who has the highest standing among students admitted to the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto, renewable for each of the three years of the law program. The scholarship is automatically assessed by Victoria College and no application is required.

The Honourable Charles L Dubin Memorial Scholarship
was established in memory of Justice Charles Dubin upon his death in 2008.  Justice Dubin was the youngest person in the Commonwealth to be made Queen's Counsel when he received the honour in 1950 at the age of 29.  He went on to a storied career in the law, as a senior partner at Torys, a Bencher of the Law Society (1966-73), a respected jurist (Ontario court of Appeal) and Associate Chief Justice (1987) and then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario (1990-1996).  He returned to private practice at Torys as Counsel after retiring from the bench.  He was famous for his inquiry into the use of drugs in Canadian amateur sports, but one of his particular legal strengths was his experience and expertise in criminal law.  He defended 15 capital murder trials before capital punishment was abolished.  He was a devoted to his wife Anne, and cared deeply for his nieces and nephews.  The Dubin Scholarship was established through a realized bequest from his estate, and from gifts from his family, friends and colleagues.  The scholarship goes to any JD student in any year based on academic merit and financial need with preference for those studying criminal law.

Michael John Eccles Entrance Scholarship
established in 1996 by Professor W. Eccles in memory of his son, Michael, to be awarded to one or more student(s) in first year on the basis of academic excellence, and financial need.

Justice Randall Scott Echlin Award
established in memory of Justice Echlin by his friends and colleagues to benefit students at his alma mater. Justice Echlin was a graduate of the Class of 1975, and shared a profound commitment to its mission. He made exceptional contributions to employment law, and as an influential mentor to a great many lawyers.  The award will benefit students in the JD program on the basis of financial need.

Fraser Milner Casgrain BBPA Harry Jerome Scholarship for Black law students
The BBPA Harry Jerome Scholarship Fund was first established by the Black Business and Professional Association in 1988 to honour the memory of Harry Jerome, a world track record holder during the 1960’s and three time Olympian, holder of a graduate degree in sciences, vocal advocate for equality for Black Canadians and a Member of the Order of Canada. The new Fraser Milner Scholarship is available to a Black student who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada; aged 17 - 30 as of September 30; admitted to or enrolled in a Canadian law school for the academic year in which the scholarship is awarded. General Motors of Canada First Generation Fund (Scholarship and Bursary)
is awarded to students who are of the first generation of their family to attend university, on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. Established by General Motors of Canada Ltd.

The Joseph H. Greenspan Memorial Entrance Scholarship
made possible by his sons, Edward and Brian, to be awarded to student(s) entering the first year of the J.D. program on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.

The Helen Rose Himmel Bursary
was created as a result of a realized bequest from the Estate of Helen Rose Himmel. It is to be awarded to any JD student in any year of study on the basis of financial need.

Harry Jerome Scholarships
are given to Black students attending a college or university in Canada in order to nurture academic excellence among Black youth. They are awarded based on high academic achievement, financial need and recognized contribution to the Black community. The Michael Kelly Memorial Award
the annual income from a capital fund established in 1995 and supported by friends, colleagues and classmates of Michael Kelly (‘90). This fund was created to honour and remember a man of courage, integrity and wisdom on the occasion of the formation of The Canadian Association of Black Lawyers and of the five-year reunion of the Class of 1990. The income is to be awarded in the first instance as an entrance scholarship to a Black student entering the first year of the J.D. program on the basis of commitment to community, academic excellence and financial need. Additional income may be used in the discretion of the Admissions Committee to assist the scholarship recipient with continuing expenses in the second- and third-year of the J.D. program. On the recommendation of the Dean, the Admissions Committee may also award a portion of the income to a Black graduate of the J.D. program at the Faculty for the purpose of pursuing graduate studies in law.

Law Excellence Scholarships
awarded to students based upon financial need and academic excellence, either through entrance scholarships or bursary support, in any year.

The Law Foundation of Newfoundland Scholarships
In honour of the 150th Anniversary of the Law Society of Newfoundland, the Law Foundation of Newfoundland has established funding for up to three annual law school entrance scholarships of $5,000 each. The scholarships are tenable for first year studies at a Canadian law school recognized by the Scholarship Board. Applications must be received by May 1. The William McCallum Memorial Scholarship
for the study of law, established in 1977 in recognition of the contributions and many years of service given to Dawson College by the late William McCallum, Chairman of the Board of Governors from 1971 to 1977, to be awarded annually to a graduate of Dawson College entering, or already studying, law. The Honourable Bert J. MacKinnon Scholarship
a gift of the friends, colleagues and former partners of the late Bert J. MacKinnon, Associate Chief Justice of Ontario, being a scholarship in the amount of $1,500, to be awarded annually on the basis of scholarship, leadership, and accomplishment in athletic activities to a Canadian citizen or person resident in Canada who is a graduate of a Canadian university and entering the first year of the J.D. program at the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto. Preference is given to graduates of McMaster University, but any qualified student may apply.

The Salim Majdalany Entrance Scholarship
based on academic achievement, to be awarded to a foreign student from Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq or any other member state of the Arab League, who is entering or is enrolled in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering or the Faculty of Law. The award is open to qualified students in both faculties but priority is to be given to candidates from the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.

McMillan LLP Scholarships
to be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic excellence to first-year or second-year students enrolled in a broadly-based program of study. Established by the law firm of McMillan LLP.

The William John Stuart Colvin McNeely and William Henry McNeely Memorial Scholarship
a gift from the Estate of Jessie Mildred McNeely in memory of her late son and husband. To be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty of Law based on financial need and academic excellence or academic potential.

Northwest Territories Law Foundation Scholarships
available to residents of the Northwest Territories who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who intend to return to the Northwest Territories to practise law. One or more scholarships is/are available in the amount of $5,000 per year to assist qualified applicants to conduct research and/or complete their legal studies. Applications are due by March 15. Ontario Medical Association Entrance Scholarship
the annual income from a capital fund of $10,000 donated by the Ontario Medical Association and made possible through the anonymous gift of a Toronto lawyer, to be awarded to a student entering the first year of the J.D. program or to a graduate student with an academic background and/or substantial work experience in the health care field.

Owen Shime Bursary
created by the children of Mr. Owen Shime on the occasion of his 80th birthday, this renewable bursary is awarded to a first year student in the J.D. program.

Roman Paduch Scholarship Fund
an endowed fund established through the Estate of Roman Paduch, to be awarded to an Aboriginal student on admission to the Faculty of Law or the Faculty of Medicine. The student will be considered on the basis of financial need, and demonstrated contribution, commitment and interest in the native community.

The W.B. Purvis National Entrance Scholarship
established through the generosity of Lynn and John Switzer, Q.C.  ‘58, for a deserving student suffering from serious physical disability, to be awarded on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activities, public service and financial need.

The Newton Rowell Scholarships
established in 1992 by the Hon. Henry N.R. Jackman, former Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Ontario, in memory of his grandfather, the Hon. Newton Wesley Rowell. These scholarships, are awarded to three students entering the first year of the J.D. program on the basis of academic excellence and a demonstrated interest in and commitment to public service. Applications are especially encouraged from students across Canada and from racial minorities and aboriginal peoples.

The John Sopinka National Entrance Scholarship
the annual income from a capital fund established on the occasion of his appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada and made possible by the generosity of his friends, to be awarded to a student or students entering the first year of the J.D. program on the basis of academic excellence, involvement in extracurricular activities, public service and financial need.

The Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales Entrance Scholarship
in the amount of $1,000, to be awarded annually to a student entering the first year of the J.D. program on the basis of academic excellence, involvement in extracurricular activities, public service and financial need. This scholarship is available to residents of the Atlantic provinces.

The Tan Family Constitutional Law Bursary
will be awarded to students in the JD program on the basis of financial need and accomplishment in the area of Constitutional Law.

The Teplitsky, Colson Entrance Scholarship
in the amount of $2,500, to be awarded annually to a student entering the first year of the J.D. program on the basis of academic excellence, involvement in extracurricular activities, public service and financial need.

Gladys Watson Aboriginal Education Fund
to be awarded to Aboriginal students, including Status, Non-Status, Métis and Inuit students, enrolled in graduate programs at the master’s or doctoral level, and second-entry programs. All Aboriginal students in these programs are eligible to apply, full-time and part-time, with preference given to those students who demonstrate financial need. John Yaremko Leadership Award
an annual entrance award recognizing financial need, academic excellence, involvement in extra-curricular activities, and/or public service to assist an exceptional first year student accepted to study at the Faculty of Law.

Jenifer Aitken Bursary
to be awarded to a student in the Faculty of Law based on financial need. Preferences will be given to students with demonstrated interest and engagement in Mooting activities.

The Philip Anisman Award
was established in the 2016-2017 academic year in support of student financial aid by alumni and friends of Philip Anisman, a graduate of the law school (LL.B. 1967) and UC Berkeley (LL.M., J.S.D.).  Philip is a renowned authority in Canadian securities law and was recently appointed a Commissioner of the Ontario Securities Commission.  A sole practitioner, he was previously a professor at York, Western and Monash Universities and Director of Corporate Research, Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada.  Philip is the author of books, articles, and reports to governments on corporate, securities, constitutional and administrative law and has advised securities regulatory organizations in Canada and internationally.

The recipient of the Philip Anisman award will also receive a copy of Karl N. Llewellyn’s The Bramble Bush, donated by Philip as a complement to the generosity of his friends.

David Asper Bursary 
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to students in the J.D. program with a demonstrated interest in constitutional rights.

The Joseph and Josephine Astaphan Bursary
was created by Kris Astaphan, in honour of his parents, Joseph and Josephine.  It is awarded annually to two students demonstrating financial need.

The Katherine G. Baker Bursary
a bequest from the estate of Katherine G. Baker '80, the annual income from the fund to be used under the direction of the Dean of the Faculty of Law to assist students in the school who are in financial need.

The Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP Scholarships
a gift of the partners of Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, matched by the university and the Province of Ontario, to be awarded annually to students in either the first or second year of the J.D. program on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. Additional factors may include recognizing diversity and the overcoming of barriers or multiple responsibilities and limited support. Other considerations may include involvement in the community and extracurricular activities at the university and with the law school and a demonstrated interest in areas of practice with which Blake, Cassels & Graydon is associated. Recipients who maintain a strong academic record and continue to demonstrate financial need will have the award renewed for the following year or years.

a gift of the law firm of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (Toronto), to be awarded annually to a student or students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

established by the Class of 2000, to be awarded to students in the J.D. program who take part in a human rights internship, on the basis of financial need.

The John Gladstone Campbell Fund
a bequest from the estate of Helen C. Johnson of Chicago, Ill., being the income from an endowed fund established in honour of the memory of John Gladstone Campbell, a graduate of the University of Toronto, to be awarded to a deserving student or students in any year of the Faculty of Law on the basis of scholarship and financial need. 

The Kenneth Chomut Bursary Fund
a gift of the family and friends of the late Kenneth Chomut '73, of the value of the annual income from the fund, to be awarded to a deserving student in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. 

Class of 1957 Fund
established in 1997 by the Class of 1957 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of their graduation. Bursary to be awarded annually to a student or students on the basis of financial need. 

Class of 1961 Fund
established in 1996 by the Class of 1961 on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of their graduation, in support of student financial aid. 

Class of 1964 Fund
established in 1989 by the Class of 1964 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their graduation. The fund is to be used to assist students in the J.D. program on the basis of academic excellence and financial need. Special consideration is to be given to students with a physical disability. 

Class of 1965 Fund
established in 1990 by the Class of 1965 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their graduation. The fund is to be used to provide financial assistance to students in the J.D. program. 

Class of 1975 Award
the Class of 1975 created this award on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of their graduation from the law school. It is to be awarded to any JD student in any year of study on the basis financial need.

Class of 1976 Fund
established in 1996 by the Class of 1976 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of their graduation, in support of student financial aid. 

Class of 1981 Fund
established in 1996 by the Class of 1981 on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of their graduation, in support of student financial aid. 

Class of 1982 Fund
established and supported through the contributions of the Class of 1982. The income from the fund to be used at the discretion of the Dean for one or more academic purposes to include but not be limited to: purchase of books and materials for the Library and provision of student bursaries. Each year the Dean shall report to the Faculty Council on the disposition of the income in the previous academic year.

Class of 1984 Award
established through donations from members of the Class of 1984 and matched by contributions from Kris Astaphan on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their graduation from the law school.  It is to be awarded to any JD student in any year of study on the basis of academic excellence and financial need

Class of 1986 Fund
established in 1996 by the Class of 1986 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of their graduation, in support of student financial aid.

Class of 1987 Graditude Fund
established and supported through the continuing contributions of the Class of 1987. The income from the fund is to be used to assist students in the J.D. program who are in financial need.

Class of 1988 Graditude Fund
established in memory of Alistair Wyatt '88, by the Class of 1988. The income from the fund is to be used to assist students in the J.D. program who are in financial need.

Class of 1990 Graditude Fund
established and supported through the continuing contributions of the Class of 1990. The income from the fund is to be used to assist students in the J.D. program who are in financial need.

Class of 1991 Graditude Fund
established by the Class of 1991 to assist students in the J.D. program who are in financial need.

Class of 1991 Fund
established in 1996 by the Class of 1991 on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of their graduation, in support of student financial aid.  

Class of 1992 Graditude Fund
established by the Class of 1992 to be used, in part, to provide loans to students in the J.D. program.

The Class of 1993 Graditude Fund
established and supported through the continuing contributions of the Class of 1993. The income from the fund will be used for a number of projects, including student financial assistance.

The Class of 1994 Graditude Fund
established and supported through the continuing contributions of the Class of 1994. The income from the fund will be used for a number of projects, including student bursaries.

Class of 1996 Graditude Fund
a student aid endowment established by the class of 1996. Fifty per cent of the annual income is contributed to a bursary and the remainder of the endowment is in support of an alternative summer employment fund.

Class of 1997 Graditude Fund, established by the Class of 1997 in support of student aid, the library, and summer internships.

The Class of 1999 Graditude Fund
established by the Class of 1999 in support of a bursary to be awarded on the basis of financial need to students in any year of the J.D. program.

Class of 2000 Graditude Fund
established by the Class of 2000 in support of book bursaries to be awarded to students in the Faculty of Law who demonstrate financial need.

Class of 2003 Graditude Fund
established by the Class of 2003. The income from the fund will be awarded annually to an upper-year J.D. student based on financial need and participation in the community.

Albert Cohen Memorial Award
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the University of Toronto on the basis of financial need in the Faculty of Law with preference given to students that are first in their family to attend law school. Additional preference will be given to Black students.

Ronald J. Daniels and Joanne D. Rosen Bursary
established by the faculty and staff of the Faculty of Law upon the occasion of Dean Daniels' departure from the law school.  This bursary is awarded annually to a student demonstrating financial need.

The Davies Ward Phillips and Vineberg LLP Bursary
a gift of the law firm of Davies Ward Phillips and Vineberg LLP, to be awarded annually to a student in the second year on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

John DeSipio Award
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student (s) at the Faculty of Law based on financial need. Preference will be given based on academic merit and to students interested in immigration law.

The Gregory House Bursary
to be awarded to student(s) at the Faculty of Law who demonstrate financial need.

The Leslie G. Dollinger Memorial Fund
a gift of the partners, associates, clients and friends of the late Leslie G. Dollinger '70, a partner in the law firm of Fogler, Rubinoff, the income from the fund to be used to assist deserving students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need and scholarship. Preference is to be given to students from northern Ontario.

The Donner Civic Leadership Fund
to be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic excellence to students participating in pro bono work at a broad range of community organizations. Established by The Donner Canadian Foundation.

The J. Bruce Dunlop Bursary Fund
established by a gift from the Class of 1968 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of their graduation and in recognition of their great affection for Professor Bruce Dunlop, the income from the fund to be used to assist students in the school who are in financial need.

The Michael John Eccles Memorial Fund
a gift of his family to honour Michael’s wish to serve society through law, the income from a capital sum to be awarded to a student in any year of the J.D. program on the basis of academic merit and financial need. (The scholarship may, in the committee’s discretion, be divided between two deserving applicants in the proportions the committee deems fit.)

The Jeffrey W. Egner Award
to be awarded to students demonstrating leadership in, and commitment to, the Advocates for Injured Workers Clinic, on the basis of financial need. Established by Bob Rae '77 and Arlene Perly Rae in memory of Jeffrey W. Egner '78.

The Faculty of Law General Student Aid Fund
established by donors to the Faculty of Law’s 1997 Annual Fund campaign. An award will be given annually to a student on the basis of financial need.

Faculty of Law Loan Fund
established through the generosity of anonymous donors to provide interest-free loans to students in the J.D. program who require financial assistance to continue their studies.

The Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP Bursary
a gift of the law firm Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, to be awarded annually to a student in first year on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

Fredrick G. Hamilton Bursary in Labour Law
Established in 2023 by Hicks Morley Hamilton Stewart Storie LLP in memory of Fredrick G. Hamilton. To be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to 1L students, upon admission with an undergraduate degree that was focused on human relations, business, commerce, or industrial relations. Students entering 2L with demonstrated interest in labour law, through extra-curricular activities, club membership (The Labour & Employment Law Society), summer research fellowships, externships, and/or Moot competitions focused on labour and employment law may also be considered.

The Harold G. Fox Education Fund
a gift of Mrs. H.G. Fox and the late Dr. H.G. Fox, to be used by the Faculty of Law for educational purposes. It is the wish of the directors of the fund that the monies be spent on bursaries and scholarships for deserving undergraduates. General Motors of Canada First Generation Fund (Scholarship and Bursary)
to students who are of the first generation in their family to attend university, on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. Established by General Motors of Canada Ltd.

Paul Ginou Bursary
established in memory of Mr. Ginou, this bursary is awarded annually to an upper year student who demonstrates financial need and a commitment to pro bono service.

Albert Gnat Memorial Scholarship
was established in memory of Albert Gnat Q.C., a graduate of the law school's Class of 1965.  He trained with the legendary Bud Estey before becoming a partner at Lang Michener (now McMillan LLP) in 1974. Albert took great pride in the legal training he received at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law, which helped him become a leader in his field. It is awarded annually to a JD student in any year of study on the basis of financial need and academic merit.

The H. Carl Goldenberg Award in Labour Law
to be awarded to a student in the second or third year at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need, academic excellence and a demonstrated interest and/or proficiency in the area of labour law. Established by friends and admirers of the late Senator H. Carl Goldenberg.

The Goldhar Bursaries
a bequest from the estate of Samuel N. Goldhar, the annual income from a fund to be used to assist students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

Wolfe D. Goodman Bursary
this bursary, awarded annually to an upper year student on the basis of financial need and subject area interest, honours the notable Toronto lawyer and founding partner of Goodman & Carr.  Preference is given to a student with a demonstrated interest in charities or not-for-profit law, or if there is no candidate with such an interest, to a student with a demonstrated interest in estate planning and trust law more generally.

The David H. Gordon Award
was established by the DH Gordon Foundation in memory of David H. Gordon (Class of 1966).  David practiced business law at McCarthy Tétrault for 35 years, much of that time spent as a tireless mentor to young attorneys.  The award is to be awarded to a JD student in first year on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.  Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated interest in Business or Corporate Law and to students originally from Northern Ontario. 

The Groia & Company Law Bursary
a gift of the law firm of Groia & Company, to be awarded to a first-year student in the J.D. program at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

The Harrowston Inc. Awards
to be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic excellence to students in the J.D./M.B.A. program, with a demonstrated involvement in community service. Established by Harrowston Inc.

Michael S Hong Bursary
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to Black students.

James Hopkins Aboriginal Law Fund
a gift from James Hopkins '96 to be awarded to an indigenous law student enrolled in the J.D. Program at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

Houlden and Morawetz Bursary
for student(s) in any year at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. Established by the friends and admirers of Justice Lloyd Houlden '47 and Dr. Carl Morawetz '43.

Victor Hum Bursary
awarded annually to a student who has a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity within the law school community. A first-generation Chinese-Canadian and the first in his family to complete a university degree, Victor Hum (’83) was passionate about promoting diversity and the rights of minorities in the eyes of the law. The Nelson A. Hyland Bursary
a gift of the Nelson Arthur Hyland Foundation, of the annual income from an endowed fund which will be awarded to a law student on the basis of scholastic ability and financial need.

The Honourable Frank Iacobucci Award
established by the Canadian Italian Advocates Organization, in honour of The Honourable Mr. Justice Frank Iacobucci. To be awarded to a student in any year who has demonstrated leadership and a commitment to community service, selected on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.

The Iacobucci Student Assistance Fund
established in 1991 by his friends and colleagues, on the occasion of the appointment of Justice Frank Iacobucci to the Supreme Court of Canada. The fund is to be used to provide financial assistance to students at the Faculty of Law.

The International Experience Scholarships
to be awarded to students who have participated in an international internship program, on the basis of financial need and academic excellence.

The Richard Ivey Foundation Awards
established by the Richard Ivey Foundation. Five bursaries to be awarded annually to second- or third-year students on the basis of financial need and a demonstrated interest or achievement in the area of environmental law. Another five bursaries will be awarded annually to students who demonstrate financial need and high academic performance generally.

JD/MBA Awards
to be awarded annually to a student in any year of the JD/MBA Programme at the Faculty of Law, on the basis of financial need and academic excellence.

Fraser Milner Casgrain BBPA Harry Jerome Scholarship for Black law students
The BBPA Harry Jerome Scholarship Fund was first established by the Black Business and Professional Association in 1988 to honour the memory of Harry Jerome, a world track record holder during the 1960’s and three time Olympian, holder of a graduate degree in sciences, vocal advocate for equality for Black Canadians and a Member of the Order of Canada. The new Fraser Milner Scholarship is available to a Black student who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada; aged 17 - 30 as of September 30; admitted to or enrolled in a Canadian law school for the academic year in which the scholarship is awarded. Selection will be based on high academic achievement; financial need; and recognized contribution to the Black community. Application forms available at www.bbpa.org . to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

Barnet H. Kussner Memorial Bursary
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the University of Toronto on the basis of financial need in the Faculty of Law. Preferences will be given first to students with a focus on municipal and planning law. If no such student exists, the award would then be open to a student taking courses focused on community building and the land development industry.

The Douglas K. Laidlaw Scholarships
to be awarded to first- and second-year students at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need, academic excellence, and a demonstrated interest and proficiency in the advocacy area. Established in memory of Douglas K. Laidlaw.

The William R. Latimer Award
a gift of the family and friends of the late William Latimer, Q.C., being the income from an endowment fund to be awarded to a student or students in any year of the Faculty of Law on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

Lau-Wan Family Bursary
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. In the event that two or more students present with equal financial need, preference will be given to a student(s) who plays sports at the Varsity or Intramural level at the University of Toronto.

Law Society Foundation Bursaries
the Law Society Foundation annually provides a sum of money contributed by the members of the Law Society of Upper Canada to assist law students in the Province of Ontario. A number of bursaries and loans are awarded at the discretion of the Faculty largely on the basis of demonstrated need.

Law Society of Ontario Education Equity Award
an award of the Law Society of Ontario funded by Lexis Nexis Canada Inc., to encourage diversity and the attainment of equity in legal education and practice. The award is made to a student enrolled in either second or third year in the JD program and who is a member of a visible minority group, a member of the Indigenous community, a member of the LGBTQ community, or a student who has a physical, psychological, or learning disability. The award is based primarily on financial need with due consideration being given to academic achievement and/or devotion and commitment to community and/or university service, as determined by the dean of the Faculty of Law or his/her designate.

Leadership Awards
a gift of Imasco Ltd., matched by the university and the Province of Ontario, to be awarded annually to students in the J.D. program on the basis of financial need and academic excellence.  

The Craig Lovgren Bursary
to be awarded annually on the basis of financial need. Established through the estate of Craig Lovgren '82.

Sheila M Holmes Bursary 
to be awarded to a student in the Faculty of Law based on financial need. Preference will be giving to students with demonstrated interest in family law, including but not limited to participation in the Downtown Legal Service Family Law Clinic and/or the Walsh Family Law Moot.

David Macdonald Award in Law and Business
to be awarded to a student enrolled in the J.D./M.B.A. program on the basis of financial need and academic excellence.

The Salim Majdalany Bursary
a gift in memory of the late Salim Majdalany '85, donated by his family and friends, in the amount of the annual interest from a capital sum, to be awarded to students on the basis of financial need.

The Diane McCaughey Bursary
a gift in memory of the late Diane McCaughey '85, donated by her family and friends.

The Miller Thomson Bursaries
a gift of the law firm of Miller Thomson to be divided annually between a first- and second-year student in the Faculty of Law on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

The Arthur Minden Award
a gift of the family and friends of the late Arthur Minden, Q.C., being the annual income from an endowment fund to be awarded to a student in any year of the Faculty of Law on the basis of scholarship and financial need and to be retained by the student for the balance of the course provided he or she maintains satisfactory scholastic standing and continues to demonstrate financial need.

Lewis R Mitz Bursary 
to be awarded to a JD student in the Faculty of Law with demonstrated financial need, with a preference given to a student who demonstrates leadership through mentorship and is active in their community.

Mayo Moran Award
to be awarded to (a) first year JD student(s) on the basis of academic excellence and financial need. Students selected will hold an undergraduate degree from Trinity College unless no such student is available in any given year. Whenever possible, the award should alternate between male and female student.

J.J. Morris Memorial Bursary
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the University of Toronto on the basis of financial need in the Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated interest in Music.

The Pamela Murray Fund
established in 1993 in memory of Pamela Murray '67, by the Class of 1967. The fund is to be used to provide financial assistance to students at the Faculty of Law.

The Geofrey Myers Memorial Scholarship
was established in memory of Geofrey Myers, an alumnus of the law school and a partner at Lang Michener LLP (now McMillan LLP). Mr. Myers earned a Masters of Science degree and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Toronto in 1974 and 1978, respectively. He was an accomplished corporate and securities attorney and became a partner at the firm in 1984.  He Chaired the Corporate Finance/Securities Law Group and the firm's Natural Resources & Mining Law Group. He was appointed Chairman of the Board in 2006, but passed away in 2008.  The Myers Scholarship was established in his memory by his family, friends and colleagues.  The scholarship goes to any JD student in any year of study on the basis of financial need and academic merit.

The Native Law Students’ Fund
established in 1988, the income and/or capital from the fund to be used at the discretion of the Dean for the benefit of native law students at the Faculty of Law.

The R. George Ness Memorial Loan Fund
a gift of the law firm of Minden, Gross, Grafstein & Greenstein, in honour of the late A. George Ness '49 to be available to both graduate and undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law at no interest, repayable on conditions to be determined upon the granting of the loan.

The Bernard Newman Memorial Award
established in honour of the memory of Bernard “Bookie” Newman (a student in the second-year of the Faculty of Law at the time of his death in 1951) by a number of his friends, and designed to recognize those characteristics which he exhibited in his lifetime, being the annual income of the subscribed fund, awarded to the student who, having completed the work of the second year, in the opinion of the Faculty, best merits the award, having regard to the objects of the donors and on consideration of: (a) scholarship; (b) high moral character; (c) financial need; (d) suitability for the practice of law; (e) interest in extracurricular and community activities; (f) consciousness of community responsibilities.

The Lee Paikin Bursary
a gift of friends and family of Lee Paikin '77, of the value of the annual income from the Lee Paikin Fund, to be awarded annually to a law student on the basis of scholastic ability and financial need.

John F. (Jack) Petch Award
was established in honour of Jack Petch’s service as Chair of the University of Toronto’s Governing Council. Jack is a graduate of the law school, receiving his JD in 1963 as well as being the Gold Medallist that year.  Donations were contributed from members of Governing Council, University Vice-Presidents, Principals and Deans, as well as friends and family of Jack Petch. It is to be awarded to any JD student in any year of study on the basis financial need.

The Richard W.J. Posluns Memorial Award
a gift of the family of the late Richard W.J. Posluns '62, of the annual income from a fund to be awarded to a deserving student or students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need and scholarship.

The Richard W.J. Posluns Memorial Bursary
a gift of the law firm of Goodman and Carr, in honour of their partner, the late Richard W.J. Posluns '62, of the annual income from a fund to be awarded to a deserving student or students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

The Ressel-Grahek Future Leaders Bursary
to be awarded to a student(s) at the Faculty of Law based of financial need. Preferences will be given to students from underrepresented groups, which currently include Black and/or Indigenous students.

Edward Roberts Bursary
to be awarded to students, based on financial need, in either the JD, LLM or SJD programs at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and who are from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Linda Rothstein Bursary
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) on the basis of financial need.

Arjun, Jayshree & Mitu Sengupta Bursary
to be awarded to one or more JD students at the Faculty of Law based on financial need. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated interest and participation in the Faculty’s Downtown Legal Services Clinic.

The Samuel and Clara Shime Bursary
made possible by their sons Owen and Jerry, to be awarded to a student in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. Special consideration to be given to a deserving student with an interest in health law.

The Schuyler M. (Skip) Sigel Bursary
an endowed fund established by Baker & McKenzie on the occasion of Skip's retirement from the firm.  The bursary is awarded annually to a student on the basis of financial need and scholarship.

Maureen L. Simpson Bursary
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the University of Toronto on the basis of financial need in the Faculty of Law. Preferences will be given to a student with demonstrated interest in history of law.

Irwin Singer Memorial Bursary
created by the friends and family of Irwin Singer, this bursary is awarded annually to a student with a demonstrated interest in Securities Law, or if there is no candidate with such an interest, to a student with a demonstrated interest in corporate and commercial law more generally.

Jeffrey M. Singer & Family Bursary
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to students from a family income of under $70,000.

The Fanny Solway Award
a gift of the family of the late Fanny Solway, being the annual income from an endowment fund to be awarded to a student admitted to the first year of the J.D. course who (a) has obtained standing in pre-law studies satisfactory to the council and who satisfies the Council of capacity to be an outstanding law student; and (b) demonstrates financial need.

The Walter R. Stevenson Bursary
an endowed fund established by Gallant Y.T. Ho, to be awarded annually to a second- or third-year student on the basis of financial need and significant improvement reflecting perseverance and determination as determined by the Faculty.

The Hubert J. Stitt Bursary
a gift of the partners of Baker & McKenzie to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of their Toronto office and to honour their colleague, Hubert J. Stitt, to be awarded annually to a J.D. student on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

The Nathan J. Stitt Bursary
a gift donated by friends, classmates and family of the late Nathan J. Stitt '64, of the value of the annual income from the fund, to be awarded to a married student on the basis of scholarship and financial need.

The David T. Stockwood Q.C., LSM Advocacy Award
established in memory of David Stockwood, an alumnus of the law school (JD 1966). A great mentor to colleagues and competing counsel, David was a talented barrister as well as a sought after mediator and arbitrator. He was the founder of The Private Court, one of the earliest alternative dispute resolution groups in Ontario, and in 2005 was awarded the Law Society Medal.  The award was established through gifts from his family, friends, colleagues and associated law firms.   The award benefits JD students in the second or third year who have demonstrated an interest in and aptitude for advocacy through their participation in advocacy work in one of the University's legal clinics.

The Jack and Ida Teplitsky Memorial Bursary
established in their memory by their son, Martin Teplitsky, Q.C., to be awarded annually in the amount of $2,500 to one or more students in the J.D. program on the basis of financial need.

The Torys Law Bursary
a gift of the law firm, Torys LLP, to be awarded annually to a student in any year of the J.D. program at the Faculty of Law, on the basis of financial need and academic excellence.

John A. Tory JD/MBA Bursary
to be awarded by the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need to students enrolled in any year of the combined JD/MBA program. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated leadership through prior community and/or school engagement activities. Consideration will be given to those students from underrepresented groups.

Trossman / Hurwitz Bursary
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

Stephen Waddams Bursary
to be awarded to (a) student(s) based on financial need. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated interest in contracts law and/or legal history.

Honourable M. Justice Ward K. & Catherine Branch Award
to be awarded to (a) full-time, undergraduate student(s) at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

The J.H. Whiteside Fund
a bursary to be awarded annually on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. Established by John (Jack) Whiteside '67.

The Caron Wishart Award
was established in memory of Caron Wishart, who passed away in December 2010.  She was a graduate of the Class of 1978 and was Vice-President of Claims at LawPRO from 1995 until 2010.  Donations were contributed from LawPRO as well as Ms. Wishart’s family, friends and colleagues. It is to be awarded to a JD student entering second year studies  on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

The Tony Chi Wah Wong Memorial Award
was established in memory of Tony Chi Wah Wong, a graduate of the law school (Class of 1985), a former Liberal MPP for Markham, and a regional councillor for York Region. He was a founding director of the Metropolitan Toronto Southeast Asian Legal Clinic. Donations were received from Tony’s friends, classmates, colleagues and family.  It is to be awarded to one or more second or third year JD students who demonstrate financial need, with preference for students participating in the Faculty’s legal clinics and/or who work to create bridges between communities inside and outside the law school.

The Torkin Manes LLP Academic Excellence & Community Service Award
Established by the partners of Torkin Manes LLP in 2004, the award goes to a second or third year student engaged in full-time studies at the Faculty of Law who has demonstrated financial need, high academic achievement and involvement in community or university service.

John Yaremko Opportunity Award
a bursary to be awarded annually to a student in any year at the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need and scholarship. Special consideration to be given to a deserving student with a disability, provided that if there is no such student enrolled at the Faculty of Law in a given year, the award may still be granted.

The Ronald S. Yu Memorial Bursary
a gift donated by the family and friends of the late Ronald Si Chen Yu '75, of the value of the annual income from the fund, to be awarded to a student in any year of J.D. program on the basis of scholarship, financial need, and interest and involvement in community activities.

Yukon Law Foundation Scholarships
are awarded to students in any J.D. program or post-graduate degree program on the basis of academic achievement, residency, community involvement and financial need.
