Internationally Trained Lawyers (ITL) Program



In response to the challenges faced by internationally trained lawyers seeking accreditation to practice law in Canada, the U of T Faculty of Law has received generous funding from the Government of Ontario to establish the Internationally Trained Lawyers (ITL) Program in Ontario, Canada, commencing in May 2010. The ITL Program is a "bridge training program" and is optional. It is NOT a requirement to practice law in Ontario.

What is the ITL Program?

The Internationally Trained Lawyers (ITL) Program is a 10-month intensive program commencing in May 2010 that will assist internationally trained lawyers living in Ontario who wish to practice law in Ontario. The ITL Program will operate at the U of T Faculty of Law in Toronto, Ontario, and will provide both academic and career-related courses that address the unique needs of international lawyers. How does the ITL Program fit with the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) and the Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC) Processes and Requirements?

The Federation of Law Societies of Canada's National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is the official credentialing body for all internationally trained lawyers seeking to have their credentials assessed in order to practice law in Canada. It is the first required step for all internationally trained lawyers before admission to the Faculty's ITL program. The ITL Program is NOT a substitute for the NCA process and requirements. The ITL Program academic courses will help to prepare international lawyers to write the NCA Challenge Exams. The ITL courses will not replace the NCA challenge exams. The deadline for submitting your application and all supporting documents to the ITL Program has been extended to February 15, 2010. Read more
